From Mother’s day to graduation ceremonies, spring is filled with an enormous amount of occasions that are often accompanied with gift giving. If you are in the market for a gift for any occasion, think about whether it is an environmentally friendly one. The following are some tips to follow when shopping for a gift, no matter whom you are buying for. (source: http://planetgreen.discovery.com).
Make it a usable gift.
Before buying a gift, evaluate whether the product will actually be something that the person will put to use, not just something that will be stored in the closet for years to come.
Consider a non-material gift.
Many of us automatically go to the store when we are shopping for a gift, however, much can be said for those gifts that offer services instead. Consider giving a gift certificate for a manicure or a massage, or perhaps even offer up your time to babysit or walk their dog.
Give a gift on behalf of someone better off.
Many times it is hard to find a gift for someone because it seems that they already have everything. If you are struggling to think of a gift idea for a person, consider donating to a charity or sponsoring a child in another part of the world on behalf of the person whom you are buying a gift for.
Buy gifts locally.
A gift made locally such as a food grown locally or a product made in your own neck of the woods saves the environment from emissions that are often consumed in shipping.
Reuse Packaging When you are wrapping gifts, consider using recyclable material such as newspaper or gift bags that you already have around the house. Even old t-shirts of fabric make for good wrapping paper.
