Reduce your Waste, Save on Green

April 13, 2009

Saving money while being eco-friendly has never been easier.  There are a number of ways to reduce the amount of waste you have in your everyday life, simply by changing the things that you buy at the store.  Below are some ways that you can reduce the amount of waste you have by altering your grocery shopping list.  You will be surprised to see how much money you can save in the process. (source: Lori Bongiomo, The Conscious Consumer).

Use Filtered Water
Drinking filtered water instead of bottled water can save you a ton of money and greatly reduce the amount of waste that you have.  According to The New York Times, the estimated cost for a person to drink eight glasses of bottled water a day is $1400 a year, compared to the estimated 49 cents it costs for filtered tap water.  Filtered water is not only less expensive than bottled, but it is also better for the environment.

Switch Garbage Bags
Buying trash bags seems to be a necessity, however, instead of buying a box of them, consider reusing the plastic bags that you already are using from the grocery store.  Recycling these bags as trash bags saves both money and the environment.

Rent Books and Movies
We all enjoy a good book or dvd, however, there is no sense in buying these items new.  With so many services offering cheap rentals and convenient mailing options, it is now easier than ever to rent instead of buy.  Additionally, the local library is a great resource for books and movies, without the costs associated with purchasing these items.  If you are worried about late fees, most places, including the library, now offer easy options for renewing products online.

Stop using Air Fresheners
Air fresheners may seem like they are cleansing the air in your home, but they are actually doing quite the opposite.  Many of the name brand “natural” air fresheners on the market today release harmful chemicals into the air, causing hormones such as pthalatates that have been known to cause serious problems such as birth defects.  Opening the windows for some fresh air is your best and most affordable option.
