We are all looking for a way to lower our outrageous energy bills each month, and now with the energy crisis staring us in the face, there is no better time than now to take the initiative and actually start making some simple lifestyle changes that can save you both money and energy. If the current energy crisis is not enough to get you to make the changes, hopefully saving electricity and a fuller wallet will give you the extra push. You will be surprised how much energy and money you can save by making just a few simple adjustments.
1) Use Fluorescent Lighting — this type of lighting will allow you to be able to change the bulbs less often, about every couple of years. This will save you both time and energy!
2) Utilize Your Windows — when the weather is cooler, opening a window and getting some fresh air really can offer you a chance to get a cool breeze without the air condition.
3) Shades — we all know just how hot it can get in the summer months. Having shades that are dark on all of the windows will allow you to be able to keep your home cooler reducing the use of your air conditioner.
4) Maintenance — many of us rarely if ever think to change filters and ventilation systems until something breaks. Changing your air filters monthly will make the HVAC more efficient and working as intended.
5) Turn off the Lights — often times we enter and leave rooms in our homes and don’t think twice about turning the lights off. Even if you are in a room, evaluate if you actually need all of that light on after all. Motion sensors are an economical improvement to a lighting system.
6) Solar tube lighting — one of the best ways to save on energy is to install solar tubes for day lighting in your home. This means no more having to turn on light bulbs during the day.
7) Monitor Outdoor Energy — drip irrigation and native landscaping, along with timers and/pr motion sensors on exterior lighting systems, will save energy and money.
